Resolution

The resolution of an image is the smallest detail that can be resolved. If the image is digital, this is the size of an object represented by one pixel, so that if an object 1m 2 is represented by 1 pixel, the image resolution is 1m. The image of Jupiter below is 260 pixels across by 251 pixels high.

Jupiter on the above image is 9 cm across orpixels. Jupiter is 139, 822 km across, so the distance represented by 1 pixel on the image above iskm, so any distance smaller than 611 km cannot be resolved.

Jupiter on the image above is 8.7 cm high orpixels. The polar diameter of Jupiter is 134,708 km so the distance represented by 1 pixel on the image iskm and is the smallest vertical distance than can be resolved.

The smallest area that can be resolved is 611*593=362323 km 2 .
