Origin of the Four Greek Elements

The BBC World Service is just full of wisdom.
Where did the Greeks get the idea that there were four elements – earth, air, fire, water?
These elements correspond to the way bodies were isdposed of.
Earth – bodies were buried
air – bodies were exposed and left to rot
fire – bodies were burnt
water – bodies were buried at sea
