In the Trump Era

I think the US election is the first time a politician has ever openly lied himself into power. The manner of his election holds a lesson for all of us:
The truth is what you choose to believe.

The Problem With Units

Why are units so confusing?
The standard unit of mass is the kilogram, not the gram, but the standard unit of length is the metre, not the centimetre.
This is why people often don’t know when to times or divide by 100 or 1,000 to change to the right units.

Probability is Ridiculous

We can only make probability a subject in maths by sterilising it and confining it to situations as predictable as getting heads or tails when flipping a coin.
In 2016 three things happened, a year previously the probability of which was pretty close to zero.
Leicester City won the Premier League
Britain voted to exit the EU
Donald Trump was elected US President
Despite these three things having probability close to zero, they all happened.
The moral? Think of any incredible disastrous thing which might possibly happen:
An alien invasion
An asteroid strike
Nuclear war
Prepare for them.

Someone Has to Deny the Holocaust

If people agree on all the facts about the holocaust, it would never make the news, and people would forget about it – most people probably do not care anyway.
We need holocaust denyers so we can get angry about the holocaust, and care enough about it prevent a reoccurrence. Every history classroom should have one.

Bristol University Accepts Lower Grades for Some Students

I am all for widening access to University, but it doesn’t make sense to me to widen access by letting students in who haven’t got high enough grades, if they come from a lower class background.
Students who haven’t got the grades are frankly, not good enough. They can’t be bothered to study, and are doomed to fail at a good university like Bristol.
Maybe though, Bristol is thinking of providing a class of dumbed down degrees for these students, in the same way as Prince Charles was provided with a dumbed down degree from Cambridge, when he failed to get the grades to get into Cambridge on merit.

A Good Education is Not For You!

Lets face it. Private schools are better. The students get better grdes, go into better Universities, get better Degrees and get better jobs.
So when private schools offer to take state students for the price the state would pay to educate them itself, and left wing campaigners refuse, I think to myself I could get more sense out of a concrete post.

Teacher Shortage in North West England

Apparently noone qualified to teach anything wants to teach in North West England, creating shortages even greater than in London, where these shortages would be more visible to politicians and rich people, so are not allowed to occur. I sometimes get asked via email, facebook and linkedin to come and work in some school in the North West of England.
I reply, ‘If you were not already working there, would you want to?’.
The fact is that the whole North West of England has been abandoned to decay, like Liverpool was under Margaret Thatcher. Anyone who has a choice leaves.
