Efficiency of Different Modes of Transport

Energy is cheap and we have so many machines to use it in all its forms. Old, petrol and diesel are the most commonly used fuels for transport, though for some forms, like trains, we might use other forms indirectly to generate electricity to power them.
Needless to say, the most efficient forms of transport are those that require no powered machinery. The diagram shows how the most common forms of transport compare in efficiency with walking and cycling, which require only muscle power.
