The Neutron Bomb

The tactical neutron bomb - or enhanced radiation bomb - is a nuclear weapon that maximises damage to people but minimises damage to buildings and equipment. It designer, American Sam Cohen, removed the uranium casing of a hydrogen bomb, allowing the neutrons released to travel great distances, penetrating even well shielded structures - buildings and tanks and armour, and several feet of earth -with lethal doses of radiation and harming anyone inside. It could be targeted accurately at troop concentrations, leaving cities only a few miles away undamaged.
Neutrons have a short half life - only about 15 minutes - so a the effects of a neutron bomb are can be restricted to an area closely defined in extent and limited in duration.
