Newton's Law of Gravity

Newtons Law of Gravity states: Every particle in the Universe attracts every other particle with a force which is proportional to the product of the two masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them. The force acts on each body equally – this is Newton's Third Law which states that to every action there is an equal an opposite reaction.

We can find the acceleration of each body due to this force by applying

The acceleration of the body of massis

The acceleration of the body of massis

The acceleration is called the acceleration due to gravity and is given the symbol

The force of gravity is a vector and the forces acting on a body due to gravity add as vectors.
