Distribution of Galaxies

Galaxies are not randomly distributed throughout space. They tend to cluster together because of their mutual gravitational attraction. In the region of the Milky Way there are about twenty galaxies, called the 'local cluster', two and a half million light years across.
The Virgo galactic cluster is 50 million light years away, has over a thousand galaxies in a volume seven light years across. Clusters of galaxies are themselves grouped into 'superclusters'. In superclusters, galaxies are arranged in 'filaments', form web like structures.
On this scale, the distribution of galaxies is nearly uniform.
